O'REILLY BAY (App N Zyrul) began awkwardly.

SEBASTIAN BACH (O Placais) and PHIDIAS (R Woodworth) bumped on jumping.

Shortly after the start, PAPARAZZI (J Powell) shifted inwards and bumped IMPERIAL FALLS (M Rodd) in onto PHIDIAS. PHIDIAS and IMPERIAL FALLS both then lost ground when crowded between OLIVER (B Vorster) and IMPERIAL FALLS, which laid inwards and away from PAPARAZZI. At the same time, LIM'S BLAST (G Boss) had to be eased to avoid the heels of QUEEN ROULETTE (N Juglall), which rolled outwards.

Approaching the 1000m, OLIVER, which was carried inwards by PAPARAZZI, had to be steadied to avoid the heels of that gelding.

Near the 900m, LIM'S BLAST, which was proving difficult to settle, shifted outwards slightly and had to be eased off the heels of RICH BEAUTY (C Grylls), which rolled inwards slightly. After passing the 900m, RICH BEAUTY had to be steadied after becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of SOUTHERN SPUR (V Duric).

PHIDIAS raced wide throughout.

IMPERIAL FALLS was held up for clear running between the 500m and the 400m.

Shortly after passing the 400m, RICH BEAUTY, which was attempting a marginal run to the inside of OPTIMUM STAR (D David), had to be steadied when OPTIMUM STAR shifted inwards slightly.

Approaching the 200m, SOUTHERN SPUR was carried outwards for a short distance by COPACABANA (K A'Isisuhairi), which shifted outwards under pressure.

Jockey Duric, the rider of SOUTHERN SPUR, reported that the gelding had returned with its saddle having shifted back during the race.

Jockey Powell, when questioned regarding the run of PAPARAZZI, stated that from a wide barrier, he was able to obtain a position midfield where the gelding travelled comfortably. He added that when placed under pressure upon entering the homestraight, PAPARAZZI failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion, was disappointing. His explanation was noted. A subsequent veterinary examination was requested on PAPARAZZI which revealed no apparent abnormality.
