RACE 2 (R844) CLASS 5 1200M (SHORT COURSE A)
IRREPRESSIBLE (App KC Wong) jumped inwards and bumped DGREAT WALL (J De
KIM SALUTE (App M Hanif) had a tendency to race fiercely in the early stages and got
its head up and had to be restrained off the runners in front.
ACME (S Ruzaini) and HAPPY CHOICE (App S Shafrizal) both raced wide throughout
Approaching the 350M, DGREAT WALL shifted in abruptly and as a result,
CHAMPAGNE ROSE (App A Thamil) had to be eased off that geldings heels.
At the conclusion of an inquiry, Jockey J De Souza, the rider of DGREAT WALL,
pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under MRA Rule 44(9)(a)(ii) in that at whilst
riding DGREAT WALL at approximately the 350M mark in this race, he allowed his
mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of CHAMPAGNE ROSE (App A Thamil)
which had to be checked.
In assessing the penalty, the Stewards took into consideration Jockey J De Souzas guilty
plea, mitigating factors, previous riding record and his submissions on penalty. He was
suspended from riding in races for a period of two (2) Malaysian race days with effect
from 3 July 2016 and to expire on 16 July 2016, both dates inclusive. He was advised of
his Right of Appeal (3:10pm).
The Stewards questioned App A Thamil, in the presence of Trainer D Murphy, and Trainer
R Lines into the tactics that were adopted on CHAMPAGNE ROSE in particular why he
raced the mare in a 5-wide position from the 1100M when there was an opportunity to race
closer to the running rail and not give away valuable ground. App A Thamil stated that the
mare had a tendency to lay out and this was the reason why he raced wide.
Trainer R Lines informed the Stewards that CHAMPAGNE ROSE was found to be lame
and this may be the reason for its performance and would report any finding on returning
to the stable.
Trainer D Murphy was not fully satisfied with his apprentices ride and agreed with the
Stewards observations, and reported that it may have been an error for him to race wide.
As the post-race veterinary examination of CHAMPAGNE ROSE revealed that the mare
was lame near fore, the Stewards took no action, however, warned App A Thamil in the
strongest terms that in future he would be expected to ride all his horses in such a manner
so as to leave no room for query.
