Trainer's Directory Details

Born to a racing family, Australian Hall of Fame trainer Lee Freedman began his career in Warwick Farm with brother Anthony in 1983, before moving to Flemington one year later. They met with greater success in Melbourne, notching their first Group 1 winner Miss Clipper in the SAJC Australasian Oaks in 1986. Freedman went on to dominate some of Australia’s biggest races over two decades, with the crown jewel being undoubtedly his five Melbourne Cups, including two of the three won by star mare Makybe Diva in 2003 and 2004. Freedman won the “race that stops a nation” the first time in 1989 with Tawrrific, then in 1992 with Subzero and 1995 with Doriemus. He also captured four consecutive Golden Slippers between 1993 and 1996 with Bint Marscay, Danzero, Flying Spur and Merlene, four Caulfield Cups and two Cox Plates. To-date, Freedman has won 124 Group 1 races, including one captured overseas, incidentally the Group 1 Singapore Airlines International Cup with Mummify in 2005. He also landed the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot with Miss Andretti in 2007 before the race was upgraded to Group 1 status. Freedman decided to retire in 2011, leaving brothers Anthony and Michael to take over the family business. When Michael moved to Singapore soon after, Anthony helmed the operations alone. After a three-year hiatus during which he was still involved in racing as a consultant, Freedman eventually returned to training in partnership with Anthony in 2014. On 1 September 2017, he received his trainer’s licence in Singapore, taking over the bulk of former nine-time Singapore champion trainer Laurie Laxon’s horses. After a relatively quiet start, Freedman made his mark at his first full season in 2018 by capturing his first Group 1 race with MR CLINT in the Singapore Guineas and eventually clinching the Singapore champion trainer title. He did not do as well in the premiership the following season, but he still snared two more landmark Group 1 races, the Singapore Derby with SUN MARSHAL, incidentally his 12th Derby all-up, and the Dester Singapore Gold Cup with MR CLINT.
