The Singapore Derby is a time-honoured classic run on the Singapore racing calendar each year where top racing action and glamour come together. The first Singapore Derby was run in 1880 with prizemoney of $150 and won by Moracia.
Today, the Singapore Derby is the final leg of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge that brings together the best of that age group.
In 2009, the Hideyuki Takaoka-trained Japanese-bred mare Jolie’s Shinju was the last horse to make a clean sweep of the Challenge when she led throughout to win the Derby, though the first two Legs were then slated as the Patrons’ Bowl and the Singapore Derby Trial. Last year, Takaoka won his third Singapore Derby (Better Life took out the 2013 renewal) with Jupiter Gold, who was ridden by French jockey Olivier Placais.
On track the action is hot, but it is just as enthralling off the track as well with the ladies and gentlemen displaying the best of Derby day fashion that again promises a spectacular day at the Singapore Turf Club.
Carrying a total purse of $1 million, the glamour race will for the second year running be held over 1,800 metres instead of 2,000 metres.
