The Emirates Singapore Derby is a time-honoured classic run on the Singapore racing calendar each year where top racing action and glamour come together. The first Singapore Derby was run in 1880 with prizemoney of $150 and won by Moracia.
Today, the Emirates Singapore Derby is the final leg of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge that brings together the best of that age group.
In 2009, the Hideyuki Takaoka-trained Japanese-bred mare Jolie’s Shinju was the last horse to make a clean sweep of the Challenge when she led throughout to win the Derby, though the first two Legs were then slated as the Patrons’ Bowl and the Singapore Derby Trial. Last year, Infantry scored an impressive win on his way to landing the Singapore Horse of the Year title.
On track the action is hot, but it is just as enthralling off the track as well with the ladies and gentlemen displaying the best of Derby day fashion that again promises a spectacular day at the Singapore Turf Club.
This year will mark the 23rd consecutive year that Emirates has been the official sponsor of the race with the $1.15 million in prizemoney making it the third richest domestic race behind the Kranji Mile ($1.5 million) and the Dester Singapore Gold Cup ($1.35 million). It will also be run over 1,800 metres instead of 2,000 metres for the first time since 1999.
